Waking up today was harder, as the lack of sleep continued to catch up with us. But once again, the teachers taught a fantastic class that made time fly by. The Ancient Civilization class discovered the life in Rome and the ancient Greek gods. The photography class presented their photo journalism assignments, experimented with aperture and had the opportunity to take 50 pictures of the beautiful Pompeii. The Italian group continued with their language lessons, were introduced to an Italian TV series, and took a pleasant walk around town. Finally, the English group continued analysing the wonderful world of poetry and began discussing the novel Lives of the Saints.
Due to the rainy weather, touring the Amalfi Coast was not ideal. That did not stop Georgia Hardy from exploring what Italy had to offer! Instead, after a quick change of plans, the group hopped on a bus to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Thankfully, Pompeii was not scorching hot, so it was much more enjoyable. The group saw the magnificant ancient ruins of the disaster in 79 A.D. when Pompeii was wiped out. We walked through the old cobblestone roads and experienced the life of the advanced Romans, while walking through their homes, basilicas and theatre. But our adventure did not stop there.
The group continued their drive up winding dirt roads to climb the dormant volcano Mount Vesuvius. Through the misty air, steep, rocky path and ear popping walk, we finally reached the top of the volcano, breathless. Once we took a look around to see the priceless view of Italy and the inside of the volcano, we knew it was worth the exhausting climb. It was unbelievable yet thrilling to imagine lava boiling under the dry land we were standing on and that it could erupt at any time!
After the tour of Mount Vesuvius, we ate a delicious dinner of local, Sorrento style macaroni and cheese - lasagne ("Pasta al forno"). It's the third day of our adventure in Italy, and it keeps on getting better and better!
